The History of Chulucanas Ceramics:
Thousands of years ago the ancient Vicus Indians developed a process, and a reputation, for making the finest ceramics in the land. Today Chulcanas Pottery is made in the city of Chulucanas, Peru, by the descendants of the native Vicus Indians. This small village can be found on the side of Mt. Vicus near the border of Ecuador. Artists there have passed down the technique of making Chulucanas pottery for thousands of years. This type of art uses all natural products from the local area. Some artists still follow the ancient technique of holding the pot with the soles of their feet leaving their hands free to shape and form the clay. The colors are achieved through a special process using the smoke from smoldering banana and mango leaves. To retain the color of the smoke, it is not recommended that the pottery be exposed to direct sunlight. Many times these pots will retain a rich smoky smell for years to come. To own Chulucanas pottery is like taking home a piece of ancient American history.
This Nativity set was acquired through a Fair Trade organization. Fair trade pays impoverished artisans a fair price for their work and puts people first, not profits!
