Stylized sculpture is finely carved to a smooth finish from a single piece of soapstone, skillfully capturing the tranquil facial expressions and draped vestments of the Holy Family. Figurine measures 10"H x 4"W x 2"D.
This Soapstone Nativity was hand-made in Kenya and acquired through a Fair Trade organization. Fair trade pays impoverished artisans a fair price for their work and puts people first, not profits.
Artisans: Kisii, a city in western Kenya, is surrounded by soapstone quarries and is well-known both for the quality of its soapstone and the skill of its carvers. Nyamarambe, a small village near Kisii, is the home of the 120-member Nyabigena Soapstone Carvers Cooperative. This civic-minded group has been providing work for its members while also giving back to its community.
