Description

The shawm (or Schalmei) is a double reed woodwind instrument. This shepherd, carved in the Huggler studios in Switzerland, stands playing the shawm. This Christnacht collection is the oldest and most traditional nativity carving from wood in the Brienz, Switzerland region. Sized for a 5.5 inch scale nativity.

In 1915, Hans Huggler-Wyss created the first handcarved nativity scene of Switzerland at the time: Cristnacht 14 cm/ 5.5" scale. Though the years the creative wood carvers of Huggler continue to carve these classic woodcarved nativity scenes figures in Brienz, the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. The family and company name Huggler is known worldwide for their Brienz wood carving talent and history. Taught by his father, Johann Huggler became one of the most magnificent wood carvers of Brienz, Switzerland. The family success history was continued by Hans Huggler (1877-1947) who, more than 100 years ago, designed the nativity figures shown here.
