Mary rests by the manger in this unique and carefully carved Holy Family from the Venetian Collection. The scale of this Nativity is represented by the standing adult figures - approximately 16 cm (6.3 inches).
Each piece of this exquisite Christmas Nativity has been hand carved and hand painted in the Lepi workshops in Italy. The life and naturalness of each individual piece is portrayed, their identities evident in the small details of their faces and positions. It is hand carved from Alpine Maple, which is indigenous to the Groden Valley and is used for all Lepi woodcarvings. The wood is dried naturally for two years, then kiln dried for two weeks, reducing the wood to a moisture content of 8-12%. This enables the carvings to be in families for generations without any cracking or damage to the wood. Purchases of any Lepi woodcarvings are viewed as family heirlooms and are passed from generation to generation. The Lepi Venetian Nativity Scene offers a few options for the Holy Family. In this style, Mary is seated with the Baby Jesus, and Joseph is standing.

Meticulously made
I decided to upscale my nativity since writing an article on settings. My old manger and nativity figures were from decades ago, and let’s say its time has come—Joseph’s head broke off. I learned about the quality of Lepi, and decided to start a tradition of building my nativity up each year. The workmanship is superb—facial, fabric details are beautiful. I’ve got the angel up next on my Christmas list. We’ll see if my wish is granted.
