Description
This colorful Haitian nativity triptych depicts a starry nativity scene across three hinged metal panels. Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus appear beneath the Star of Bethlehem in the center, with the Three Kings on one side and shepherds and a sheep on the other. Hand-painted details, embossed patterns and arched openings give the triptych the classic character of Haitian metal art.
The triptych measures approximately 8 inches high by 15 inches wide when fully opened. Its hinged design allows the side panels to be adjusted for display and folded for easier storage.
How is this Haitian nativity made?
This nativity triptych is made by hand in Haiti from recycled metal oil drums. The oil drums are opened and flattened, then artisans draw the design onto the metal and use simple hand tools such as hammers and chisels, to cut, shape and add detail to the scene. The finished nativity is finally hand painted, giving each piece its own individual character.
