This eye-catching nativity scene handmade in Poland by artist Jan Freiberg. As part of the szopka Krakowska tradition of nativity art in Poland, artists make these luminous nativity scenes from foil paper, cardboard and beads.
Each year, on the first Thursday of December, artists gather in Krakow, Poland to display the Christmas nativity cribs they have created. The Polish making of the szopka Krakowska is part of the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.
This nativity features the holy family nestled under a decorative arch doorway with a star above. Above the nativity scene are five spires, three of which are adorned to represent St Mary's Basilica in Krakow, which is traditional in szopka krakowaska. The clock from the town hall tower in Krakow is depicted and two Polish flags and the Polish Eagle are perched atop the spires.
