Description

A stunning fair trade African 12 piece nativity scene crafted using the Raku pottery technique. Raku pottery has its origins in 16th Century Japan. Characterized by hand-molding, low-firing and removal from kiln while still hot, Raku pottery has taken many forms and styles as the medium has traveled the globe. In South Africa, Raku pottery is traditionally a very colorful form of art. These pieces are handcrafted in South Africa and the designs are the originals of the artist. Tallest human figure measures approximately 6.5 inches high. Each piece is uniquely handmade and coloration will vary.

This magical Nativity feature indigenous animals, including an elephant, zebra and giraffe, alongside the Holy Family, three Wisemen and angel. No two Nativity scenes will be identical and there is a color variation from piece to piece. The cracqueling visible is a natural part of the Raku process.

The ancient Japanese method of Raku firing lends itself to unique African inspired pottery. Each piece is removed from the gas kiln at 950 degrees Celsius and placed in sawdust. The glaze crazing is then blackened by the smoldering sawdust. This processed is largely random and the slight imperfections that appear in the glaze are all part of the attraction and excitement of raku firing.

An absolutely beautiful piece. Beautiful bright colors. Crackled finish adds textural interest. A must have for collectors.
