Fontanini New for 2026 Spotlight - Lorenzo the Cheese Peddler
The folks at the House of Fontanini have added Lorenzo the Cheese Peddler and his cheese cart as part of their new for 2026 offerings.
Why would a nativity village need a cheese peddler scene you might ask? Well, in biblical times cheese was every bit as popular as it is today. Predominately made from sheep's milk or goat's milk, soft cheeses would be made by mixing the milk with water and salt and allowing it to mature before scooping it into bags like those hanging from Lorenzo's cheese cart. Wheels of cheese would have been made with the addition of rennet from the digestive tracts of sheep, goats, deer or cattle.
A Fontanini nativity village is truly complimented by the addition of Lorenzo the Cheese Peddler and his cheese cart. A bustling Bethlehem would have needed some fresh cheese to accompany the people's daily bread!
