Origins & the Vertep Tradition

Many Ukrainian nativity scenes are descended from the vertep tradition - a mobile puppet theater presentation of the nativity. The earliest instances of the vertep tradition are from ther mid 17th century with one of the most interesting examples being from 18th century. In this instance, students from the Bursa region of Kyiv brought a large nativity performance to the estate of the Galagan family in the Poltava Region. In gratitude for the gracious hosting by the family, the students gifted the nativity vertep to the estate which included nativity pieces, storage compartment, sheet music and 80 pages of dialogue.
