At the time of Jesus’ birth, people traveled by foot, by animal, or in a cart. Donkeys were the common load carriers, as horses were only used by the rich or as a war animal. Mary's Donkey no doubt was the means of travel for the 75 mile journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem.
The animals explicitly mentioned as being present at Jesus’s birth in the Bible are oxen, donkeys, and sheep, so certainly Mary's Donkey was given shelter near the family she carried.
